How to Get Rich on a Texas Cattle Drive
By Tod Olson with illustrations by Scott Allred & Gregory Proch (National Geographic, 2010)
How to Get Rich on a Texas Cattle Drive, the third and final title in the three volume How to Get Rich series, charts the bruising progress of young A.J. “Little John” Larken, who sets out from Iowa in 1877 to find his fortune as a cowboy in Texas. A.J. works hard, keeps a wary eye on the money he makes and spends, but things do not go as planned. Continuing the series concept I created with my collaborators Marc Aronson and Tod Olson in How to Get Rich in the California Gold Rush, we delivered the book to our publishing partner, National Geographic, as a disk ready for prepress.
Like its series siblings, How to Get Rich on a Texas Cattle Drive is fun (and often funny), wonderfully illustrated, and richly informative. It’s a breezy romp through one of the defining periods in American history, punctuated by dramatic examples of good and bad business decision-making.
[T]his book provides one of the better true-to-life insider accounts of what happens on a cattle drive: why the cattle are being driven, where they’re being driven to and from, and the multitude of daily chores and unforeseen obstacles along the way.” —Booklist
